Educational Programs
The plantation is in an enticing natural setting that lends itself to visits by student groups and can provide them with a variety of educationally worthwhile experiences. We would like students (studying Maryland and US History) to experience life on a 18th century plantation first hand in order to instill in our young people an understanding and appreciation of Maryland and Cecil County's rich heritage and the importance of preserving this treasure for future generations.
A two to three hour visit can include some of the following docent led tours and demonstrations:
* A demonstration of shearing, washing, dying, carding and spinning wool
* A demonstration of heat and light starting with the earliest sources, such as swamp reeds, and moving through rendering animal fat, dipping candles and finally electricity
* A tour of the 1730 manor house furnished with handsome antiques
* A tour of the separate colonial kitchen
* A tour of the prize house
* A nature walk identifying trees, plants, birds and other wildlife found on the plantation
* Games on the lawn and in the boxwood garden
* Picnic lunch on the grounds
